Paperless Freight in the Focus of the Aviation Industry - 150 delegates at the first German eFreight Conference organized by Lufthansa Cargo
Frankfurt, 26 May 2010 -- An emphatic plea for speeding up the development of paperless airfreight was heard today by the total of around 150 delegates at the first German eFreight conference. Lufthansa Cargo had organized the conference in Frankfurt together with the German branch of IATA (International Air Transport Association). The CEO and Chairman of the freight airline, Carsten Spohr, emphasized the significance of eFreight for the international airfreight industry: "eFreight is an overdue step towards the professionalization of our industry. The transition to electronic documentation represents a basis for further innovative leaps".
The development of eFreight was initiated by IATA and introduced for the first time in 2007. Lufthansa Cargo, as the lead carrier in Germany, already sent the first paperless shipment from Frankfurt on its way to Seoul in 2008. Frederic Leger, Head of Cargo Process & Standards at IATA, made it clear to the conference just how much the aviation industry can benefit from eFreight. In addition to the clear savings in terms of paper – the freight papers produced annually could fill 80 Boeing 747-400s - eFreight also facilitates faster and more cost-effective processes for all those involved in the value chain. The senders and forwarding agents also emphasized the advantages of the paperless processes and expressed a clear request to the airlines to make eFreight available everywhere. In recent weeks, Lufthansa Cargo has moved a great deal closer to the achievement of this objective. With the extension to include the airports of Leipzig and Stuttgart, since the beginning of the month the freight airline company is now offering its customers paperless airfreight transport at a total of six German stations.
The CEO and Chairman of Lufthansa Cargo, Carsten Spohr, made it clear that there is still a need for even greater efforts on the part of the aviation industry before a genuinely full-coverage offer can be made to the customers. "Our industry still has a considerable backlog demand here. We must become even faster with the implementation of eFreight. Complex document processes which run parallel to the transport of the goods are not appropriate for the 21st century".
